Painter and graphic artist. In 1951 Sánchez was awarded a prize by the Center for Puerto Rican Art on the occasion of his first individual exhibition in San Juan. In 1957 he studied in New York as a recipient of a scholarship from the Brooklyn Museum, and in Paris, with a grant from the University of Puerto Rico. In 1960 he went to Mexico, with a scholarship from the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, to study mosaic technique. In the 1970’s he moved to Chicago. Sánchez favors as his subjects the landscape of the Puerto Rican countryside, scenes of rural life, religious scenes, and social criticism. He belongs to the “Fifties Generation” of Puerto Rican artists, and his style is characterized by the artist’s use of heavy black lines and bright colors, so that the figures have a sculpture-like appearance.
