The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (MAPR) begins the commemoration of its fifteenth anniversary with the Grand Annual Gala which will be held the evening of Saturday, March 21, 2015, at an event to celebrate the history of Santurce, starting from its music and its leading exponents.
MAPR headquarters, located in the heart of San Mateo de Crabs, today Santurce, housed during the last century one of the dependencies of the then Municipal Hospital of San Juan. Of the 13 buildings that made up the medical complex, the only one that still exists is the surgical hospital was opened in 1909, and today Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico. Since then, the building has stood as a silent witness to the evolution Santurce, first as a hospital, then central government services, up to serving as the house of one of the greatest museums in the island. The Gala will be the occasion to celebrate fifteen years of the MAPR and its evolution to be an axis of transformation, conservation and education about the culture and the arts in Puerto Rico.
This gala will be a journey that starts in the Santurce of the last century and take us on a musical journey history to the present. The bolero, cha cha, plena, guaguancó, bomba and salsa, resonate in the Grand Ballroom of the Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino to celebrate fifteen years of the museum and its invaluable contribution to the community.
Santurce is flavor. Musicality surrounds its name. Its streets, plazas and neighborhoods witnessed the birth of prominent voices and Puerto Rican musicians who have called Santurce home. Therefore, an orchestra conducted by maestro Ángel 'Cucco' Peña accompany the voice of the Gentleman of the Salsa, Gilberto Santa Rosa, to commemorate the achievements of those great names of our music who took their first steps in the sidewalks of Santurce. Hits of Tito Rodríguez, Rafael Cortijo, Pellín Rodríguez and Ismael Rivera will be some of the songs that will make those attending the Gala dance the night away. The traditional 'afterparty', named this time as 'The Quinceañero' will be entertained by the musical group 'Sin prisa'.
Julio Cintrón and Emilio Olabarrieta of Arquetipo will be responsible for the atmosphere of the room that will be majestically transformed through artistic installations inspired by the Santurce of the twentieth century. The menu will be specially created for the occasion by Chef Jannette Berrios and the culinary team of Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino.
The Grand Annual Gala, one of the largest fundraising efforts done by the museum, is made possible by the support from businesses and individuals who, year after year, stand with us through their contributions. Thanks to the commendable work made by the Gala Committee, the Board of Trustees and staff of the Museum together, the event is successfully moving towards its revenue goals.
The success of this philanthropic event lies in the hands of the Museum and a distinguished group of citizens who belong to the Gala Committee, including the First Lady of Puerto Rico, Wilma Pastrana Jiménez, as the Honorary Chair of the Committee.

Notably, like every year all tickets purchased or acquired by way of sponsorship, result in memberships for students in the public system, allowing them to visit the museum free of charge for one year with an adult. The Gala has generated over 5,000 memberships have been distributed among schools in the country.
