Painter, draftsman, watercolorist, and educator. Sánchez Felipe studied at the Academia de San Fernando in Madrid and was a student of Spanish artists Antonio Muñoz Degrain, Cecilio Plá, and Julio Romero de Torres. Before coming to Puerto Rico in 1933, he traveled through several countries in the Americas. In addition to his painting, Sánchez Felipe was a teacher, and many of our most important artists studied under him and received his encouragement, including Augusto Marín, Fran Cervoni, and Rafael Tufiño. In 1934, he became director of the art school established in San Juan by the Puerto Rico Relief Emergency Administration. His works were exhibited in the Casa del Arte, at the Ateneo Puertorriqueño, and at the University of Puerto Rico. He published several books on drawing. He was an extraordinary draftsman, and his realistic paintings and watercolors are celebrations of the urban landscape of San Juan and excellent examples of the local-color tendency in traditional Puerto Rican painting. All his pictorial work is distinguished by his painstaking attention to detail.
