"Guanábana Madre II*" (2004)
Sculptor, painter, draftsman and professor. González earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Sculpture at the Puerto Rico School of Visual Arts in 1978, and his Master’s Degree in drawing, with a sub-specialization in Sculpture, at the Universidad Complutense of Madrid in 1982. Since 1992, he has had half a dozen solo shows and, since 1995, has taken part in several group shows in Puerto Rico. His sculptures are part of collections and public spaces; the best known, perhaps, is Cangrejos (“Crabs”), a functional sculpture (public benches) in Santurce. He has done other public-art projects in towns such as Fajardo, San Sebastián, Añasco and Humacao. He is a professor at the Puerto Rico School of Visual Arts. The International Art Critics Association, Puerto Rico Chapter, has awarded him twice the prize to the best exhibition of the year (1996 and 2004). In his sculptural work, of semi-abstract and deconstructivist style, he utilizes materials, which he sometimes combines, such as stone, wood, metal and found objects; sometimes he applies patinas, oxides, and tints to the surface of his pieces. A recurrent motif in González’ work is the guanábana, or soursop. He has also tackled painting by using aerosols over Plexiglas.
