Miguel Campeche

San Juan, PR 1740-1813

Biography Details

Painter. Brother of José Campeche. Some of Miguel’s paintings have been erroneously attributed to José in his youth, as Miguel’s paintings are of inferior quality to Jose’s and the line is more prominent than the fields of colors, as in José’s early paintings. Miguel was the older of the two Campeche brothers and he, like their other brother, Ignacio, often worked as an assistant in José’s studio. Unsurprisingly, given the time at which the work was produced, the paintings deal mainly with religious images and scenes of Virgins and saints.

Artist Statement

"Miguel Campeche must have assisted his brother José in the painting process, given the similarity of the two works [Inmaculada Concepción by Miguel Campeche and Nuestra Señora de la Concepción by José Campeche]: so far there is no faithful copy of the San Francisco canvas executed by José than this copy of his brother. The chronology Miguel’s work must be around the date of José’s canvas. "
