Sculptor and teacher. A graduate of the Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico, Berríos is one of the so-called “Nineties Generation” artists. His interest in sculpture began in his childhood when he came in contact with cabinet-making in his grandfather’s workshop; later, his work as a restorer of antique furniture for an antiques dealer in San Juan reinforced this calling. He has taken part in several international events, winning first prize for sculpture at the Second International Stone Sculpture Symposium in Ichon, Korea, in 1999 for a piece carved from black Korean granite. He has shown his work at the Busan Biennial in Korea in 2004 and at the Summer Biennial in Lulea, Sweden in 2005. His sculpture for the Puerto Rico Public Art Project, Solid Water and Liquid Stone, is located in the town plaza in Toa Alta, Puerto Rico. Berrios teaches sculpture at the Puerto Rico School of Plastic Arts. His work is wide-ranging, and often incorporates external elements such as light. He is interested in exploring the concept of weaving, literally and metaphorically, creating sculptures in many materials (metal, stone, concrete, wood) which visually allude to woven materials and the act of weaving.
Ramón Berríos, is a lover of stone, material he has managed to dominate. His sensual forms create a seductive play with the viewer, who sees himself invited to participate in them and discover their mystery.
