Description

Biography

Painter, draftsman, sculptor, installation artist, teacher. Rodríguez Luiggi began his studies in drawing at the San Juan Art Students League, under Ismael Dieppa. He went on to study at the Puerto Rico School of Plastic Arts, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in painting in 1992; he has taken graduate courses at the Center for Advanced Studies in San Juan, classes in ceramics, drawing, and painting at the Art Students League of San Juan, and ceramics classes at Casa Candina. Recently, he has devoted himself to his career in art while teaching painting at the School of Plastic Arts, where he is also chair of the Painting Department. He has taken part in numerous group shows as well as several solo exhibitions, and has won prizes such as the Acquisitions Prize at the Sixth Annual National Selection of Art sponsored by the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in 2005. In 2002, the Public Art Project, sponsored by the government of Puerto Rico, chose Rodríguez Luiggi to create two murals, Esporas (Spores) and Mi Río Piedras (My Río Piedras). His early work revolved around painting and drawing, almost always in combination. His drawing-paintings have an extremely organic quality and employ a variety of forms, elements, and fantastic characters, through which Rodríguez Luiggi comments on social and political issues. More recently, he has become interested in mixed media and installations, with works directed more toward questions of visual perception and tactile sensation.
