Painter, professor and poet. Cervoni began his studies in the arts under the Spaniard Alejandro Sánchez Felipe. In 1934, he moved to Europe and studied first at the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid; then, in Paris, at the L’ École des Beaux Arts and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière; and later at the San Marcos Royal Academy of Painting in Florence. Since 1939, he studied at the National School of Plastic Arts (San Carlos Academy) in Mexico City and trained as a muralist under the tutelage of Diego Rivera. Cervoni taught perspective at said School and at the Universidad Femenina of Mexico in Mexico City (now the Universidad del Valle de México, Chapultepec), theater design at the University of Puerto Rico, and painting at the Puerto Rico School of Plastic Arts for twenty-three years. Since 1948 he had his own academy of painting and drawing in Santurce. Committed to the cause of political independence for Puerto Rico, he introduced the subject of revolutionary action into the Island’s plastic arts, depicting scenes of the armed struggle in Puerto Rico in the fifties.
