Performance artist and painter. Mercado studied at Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico in San Juan, where he obtained a BA, and where he also learned the art of performance. Since 1987 he has been staging his performance works. In 1999 he received a grant from Fondo Nacional para el Financiamiento del Quehacer Cultural from Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña. His performances achieved international dimensions through his participation in important exhibitions and shows abroad, such in the Dominican Republic, Spain, United States and Peru. Mercado performs his works by taking advantage of the ambiguity of what surrounds him, seeking to create an impression on the viewer. His work stands out for breaking schemes of everyday life, from the clothes he wears to the contents of his performance.
"You can negotiate the story you want to present but at the time of doing it; it will be the story of what is there. It is immediate reaction; I deal with the body, images."
