San Juan, P.R., 1956
Graphic artist, draftswoman and professor. She received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the University of Puerto Rico in 1976. She then studied and lived in Mexico for about ten years, when she completed a master’s degree from the National School of Fine Arts (Academia de San Carlos) in 1986. She was a professor at the Fine Arts Department of the University of Puerto Rico and since 1991 teaches at the School of Visual Arts of San Juan. Her works have been shown in numerous exhibitions, biennials and triennials, and she has won awards and recognitions in international events such as the Mexico Printmaking Biennial (1985), the San Juan Biennial of Latin American and Caribbean Printmaking (1986 and 1991) and the grand prize of the XVIII Ljubljana Biennial of International Printmaking in Slovenia. She also was a member of the Association of Women Artists of Puerto Rico. She has worked and promoted the silk‑aquatint technique, an alternative to traditional intaglio that does not use nitric acids to treat plates. Her graphic work, which for years she alternates with drawings, reflects her dedication and great technical mastery in sophisticated large‑format prints with figures that are portrayed in extremely contorted lines as a symbol of the existential angst of our times.
"…the subject matter of my work could be summarized the following way: the struggle and continuous search of human beings for their own definition within a depressing and colonial society. Men and women fighting stereotyped social roles imposed by society which limit their full development as individuals intimately linked to their social problems".
