Rafael Ferrer

San Juan, PR, 1933
Painter, sculptor, graphic artist, performance artist, teacher, musician. Ferrer studied music at Syracuse University in New York and in 1952 came to study at the University of Puerto Rico under Spaniard Eugenio Fernández Granell. In that period he created several installations and Surrealist sculptures assembled out of disposable materials; due to their break with the polite, refined aesthetic of Puerto Rican art of the time, these exhibits caused a significant impact. In 1966 Ferrer moved to Philadelphia and taught at the Philadelphia College of Art; he has also taught at several other universities in the US. During his career he has been the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and three fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts; museums such as the MoMA, the Metropolitan, and the Whitney have acquired his work. He has received wide recognition as an avant-garde artist, his work being referred to as neo-Dadaism and Anti-Art. His most recent production includes pencil drawings and gouache on paper in tribute to Alberto Giacometti, a series of gouache and gesso self-portraits, and oil paintings.
“An artist noted for his simple and very straight forward style. Always working directly from life, his images are brightly colored figures. He presents a kind of sophisticated naïve style”.
