Painter, sculptor, draughtsman, and printmaker. As a teenager he joins Music & Art School in New York City, where he acquired his early academic foundations in visual arts. In 1965 he enrolled at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus, where he studied with professors Félix Bonilla Norat, John Balossi, Osiris Delgado and Carlos Marichal. After graduating from the UPR, DeRomero returns to New York in 1967 to study at Pratt Institute where he graduated with a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts in 1970. In 1968 he obtained first prize in drawing from the American Art Association in New York. In 1970 he was awarded with a Fulbright Fellowship to travel to Mexico City for two years, and work under the tutelage of Mexican muralist and painter David Alfaro Siqueiros. In 1993 he received a scholarship from the Fundación Alfonso Arana which took him to Paris to study and work for two years, and where he also took independent studies at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. His work has been exhibited in Puerto Rico, Santo Domingo, Costa Rica, United States, Orient and Europe.
As an artist I’m not responsible to art history. I have nothing to do with it. I only make pictures…spontaneous… fresh… and most of all, with the excitement of discovery.
