Pintor, fotógrafo y diseñador gráfico. Obtuvo su bachillerato en Tufts University en 1973 y su maestría en Hunter College en 1976. En Hunter estudió con Rosalind Krauss. Durante su corta vida, realizó cuatro exposiciones individuales y participó en varias colectivas; además, su obra se ha incluido en diversas exhibiciones organizadas después de su muerte en 1986, como la retrospectiva que en 1994 le hizo el Grey Gallery and Study Center de la Universidad de Nueva York. Entre sus influencias se encuentran la obra pictórica de Manet y Velázquez, la filosofía de Heidegger y la literatura de Marcel Proust. Se le ha asociado con la estética camp, en la que predomina el estilo sobre el contenido y que también está relacionada con la cultura queer. En 1980 expuso en Nueva York una serie de fotonovelas basadas en la ópera, las películas de segunda calidad (B-films) y la literatura barata (pulp), satirizando la sensiblería popular. Su serie de pinturas de perros de raza, hecha a principios de los ochenta en el estilo romántico, ilustra su crítica al rechazo de estilos del pasado por parte de sus contemporáneos, quienes lo categorizaron como reaccionario.

Después de todo, aquella efervescencia de imágenes visuales que me bullían en la mente me declaraban sin alternativa pintor […]. No sé, nunca se me ocurrió que el pintor siempre tiene (por lo menos, debe siempre tener) un pensamiento visual. Hoy me doy cuenta de que aquellos pintores de mi grupo no eran brutos, era que no tenían lengua.”
