Datos Biográficos

Creador de instalaciones, acciones e intervenciones artísticas y arte público.  Se graduó del Herbert H. Lehman College en Nueva York con un bachillerato en sociología y se hizo trabajador social en el Bronx.  Luego se unió a la bailarina, creadora de performances y coreógrafa Merián Soto para fundar el grupo Pepiatán, que se dedicaba al performance y a la danza moderna, incorporando ritmos caribeños a sus coreografías.  A fines de los ochenta experimentó con objetos, ya fuera creados o encontrados, los cuales adornaba efusivamente.  Ya en los noventa, se estableció como artista de instalaciones y acciones en las que interactuaba con la comunidad desde su génesis hasta pasada la experiencia.  Ha recibido diversos premios, becas y reconocimientos, incluida la beca de la Fundación MacArthur.  Sus temas giran siempre en torno a la identidad, la diáspora, el racismo, el machismo y otros problemas sociopolíticos que aquejan a las comunidades hispanas pobres en Puerto Rico y Nueva York.  La superabundancia de elementos que utiliza en sus piezas ha hecho que algunos críticos denominen su estilo “barroco criollo”, aunque sus referencias son frecuentemente de carácter universal.
